Description
Digitaria ventriosa (also called ventricose finger grass, among many other common names) is an annual grass species native to Africa. It has a tufted habit, with a height of up to 1 m and a width of up to 0.5 m. It is found in grasslands, woodlands, and savannas, and is tolerant of a wide range of soils.
Uses & Benefits
Digitaria ventriosa is used as an ornamental grass and is also used as a fodder crop for livestock.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Digitaria ventriosa is a small, yellow-green spikelet, with a single floret. The seed is a small, dark brown grain. The seedling is a small, slender grass with a single leaf blade.
Cultivation and Propagation
Digitaria ventriosa can be propagated by seed or division. When propagating by seed, sow the seeds in a well-draining soil mix in a warm, sunny location. Keep the soil moist but not soggy and the seeds should germinate in 10-14 days. When propagating by division, dig up the plant and divide the root ball into several sections. Replant the divisions in a sunny location with well-draining soil and keep the soil moist. The divisions should take root in a few weeks.
