Description

Dendrocalamus pulverulentus (also called White Bamboo, among many other common names) is a medium-sized, evergreen, perennial grass native to Southeast Asia. It grows up to 15 meters tall and has long, woody culms with a diameter of up to 8 cm. It is found in tropical and subtropical forests, as well as in open areas with sandy or clay soils.

Uses & Benefits

Dendrocalamus pulverulentus is used for making paper and pulp, as well as for weaving mats and baskets. It is also used as a windbreak and for soil conservation.

Flower, Seeds and Seedlings

Dendrocalamus pulverulentus has small, yellowish-white flowers that are arranged in clusters. The seeds are small, brown and oblong. The seedlings are thin and have long, narrow leaves.

Cultivation and Propagation

Dendrocalamus pulverulentus can be propagated by seed or by division of the rhizomes. Seeds should be sown in a well-drained, fertile soil mix in a sunny location. The seedlings should be kept moist and fertilized regularly. Division of the rhizomes is done in the spring or fall.
