Description
Cinnagrostis reitzii (also called Reitz's Cinnagrostis, among many other common names) is a species of flowering plant in the Poaceae family. It is native to South America. It grows in dry grasslands, in rocky areas and in savannas.
Uses & Benefits
Cinnagrostis reitzii is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and as a houseplant. It is also used to make a tea that is said to have medicinal properties, such as being a diuretic and helping with digestion.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Cinnagrostis reitzii has small, white flowers with yellow anthers. The seeds are small and black, and the seedlings are slender and upright.
Cultivation and Propagation
Cinnagrostis reitzii can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in spring in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. Division in spring or autumn is also possible. Larger divisions can be planted out direct into their permanent positions. We have found it best to pot up the smaller divisions and grow them on in a cold frame until they are established before planting them out in late spring or early summer.
