Description
Cinnagrostis mollis (also called soft bentgrass, among many other common names) is a species of grass native to the Mediterranean region. It is a perennial grass with a tufted growth habit and grows up to 40 cm tall. It has narrow, flat leaves and small, nodding flower spikes. It is found in dry grassland, open woodlands, and rocky slopes.
Uses & Benefits
Cinnagrostis mollis is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and parks. It is also used as a food source for livestock and has medicinal properties that can be used to treat various ailments.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Cinnagrostis mollis has small, white flowers with yellow anthers. The seeds are small and black, and the seedlings are slender and upright.
Cultivation and Propagation
Cinnagrostis mollis can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in spring in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. Division in spring or autumn is also possible. Larger divisions can be planted out direct into their permanent positions. We have found it best to pot up the smaller divisions and grow them on in a cold frame until they are established before planting them out in late spring or early summer.
Where to Find Cinnagrostis mollis
Cinnagrostis mollis can be found in the tropical and subtropical regions of South America, including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
