Description
Chusquea gigantea (also called Giant Cane, among many other common names) is a species of bamboo native to Mexico, Central America, and South America. It is a clumping bamboo with thin, light green culms that can reach up to 8 m in height. It prefers moist, shady habitats and is commonly found in cloud forests.
Uses & Benefits
Chusquea gigantea is used as an ornamental grass in gardens and landscaping. It is also used as a source of fiber for making rope, mats, and baskets.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Chusquea gigantea is a small, greenish-white spikelet, with a single floret. The seed is a small, brownish-black nutlet. The seedlings are thin, with a single leaf blade and a short stem.
Cultivation and Propagation
Chusquea gigantea can be propagated by division or by seed. To propagate by division, divide the clump in spring or autumn. To propagate by seed, sow the seed in spring in a cold frame. The seed should germinate in 1-2 months at 15°C. When large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the cold frame for their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts.
Where to Find Chusquea gigantea
Chusquea gigantea can be found in the tropical forests of Central and South America.
