Description
Calamagrostis abnormis (also called abnormal reed grass, among many other common names) is a perennial grass native to Japan. It grows in clumps and has narrow, green leaves. It prefers moist, shady habitats and can be found in meadows, woodlands, and along streams.
Uses & Benefits
Calamagrostis abnormis is used as an ornamental grass in landscaping, as it is a low-growing, drought-tolerant grass. It is also used as a cover crop in agricultural fields, as it helps to prevent soil erosion.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Calamagrostis abnormis is a small, reddish-brown spikelet with a single floret. The seed is a small, dark brown caryopsis with a thin pericarp. The seedlings are slender with long, narrow leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Calamagrostis abnormis is a perennial grass that grows up to 1 m tall. It is propagated by seed, which should be sown in a well-drained, sandy soil mix. Keep the soil moist but not wet. Germination usually takes place within 2-3 weeks. Once the seedlings are established, they can be transplanted into individual containers and grown until they are ready to be planted out in the garden.
Where to Find Calamagrostis abnormis
Calamagrostis abnormis can be found in the mountains of Central and Eastern Europe.
