Description
Penstemon marcusii (also called Marcus' Penstemon, among many other common names) is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows up to 40 cm tall. It is native to the western United States and Canada, where it is found in dry, open habitats, such as sagebrush and juniper woodlands.
Uses & Benefits
Penstemon marcusii is a drought-tolerant plant that is often used in rock gardens and as a ground cover. It is also used in xeriscaping, as it requires very little water to survive.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Penstemon marcusii is a tubular, two-lipped corolla, usually blue to purple in colour. The seed is a small, dark brown nutlet. The seedlings are small, with oval-shaped leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Penstemon marcusii is a perennial plant that can be propagated through division or cuttings. It can be cultivated in well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. It is drought tolerant and can tolerate temperatures as low as -20°F (-29°C). It is best to water the plant regularly during the growing season and to fertilize it with a balanced fertilizer once a year.
Where to Find Penstemon marcusii
Penstemon marcusii can be found in the western United States, primarily in California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona.
