Platanthera convallariifolia (also called Lily Leaved Orchid, among many other common names) is a species of orchid native to North America. It is found in moist meadows, bogs, and wet woods, from Newfoundland to Alaska, south to Pennsylvania and Oregon. It is a perennial herbaceous plant growing from a thick, fleshy rhizome. The leaves are basal, lanceolate, and up to 20 cm long. The inflorescence is a terminal raceme of up to 30 fragrant, white to pink flowers. The sepals and petals are fused and form a hood over the column.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Platanthera convallariifolia has white to pale pink flowers, with a yellow-green lip. The flowers are borne on a slender, erect stem. The seed capsules are round and contain numerous small, black seeds. The seedlings are slender and have a single, erect stem.
Cultivation and Propagation
Platanthera convallariifolia is a perennial herb that can be propagated from seed or division. It prefers a moist, shady position and well-drained soil. It is best to water the plant regularly, but not too much. Pruning is not necessary, but it can be done to shape the plant.
