Description
Platanthera boninensis (also called Bonin Island Orchid, among many other common names) is a species of orchid native to Japan. It is found in moist meadows, bogs, and wet woods, on the Ogasawara Islands. It is a perennial herbaceous plant growing from a thick, fleshy rhizome. The leaves are basal, lanceolate, and up to 20 cm long. The inflorescence is a terminal raceme of up to 30 fragrant, white to pink flowers. The sepals and petals are fused and form a hood over the column.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Platanthera boninensis has white to pale pink flowers, with a yellow-green lip. The flowers are borne on a slender, erect stem. The seed capsules are round and contain numerous small, black seeds. The seedlings are slender and have a single, erect stem.
Cultivation and Propagation
Platanthera boninensis is a slow-growing, shade-loving plant that prefers moist, well-drained soil. Propagation is best done by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in spring in a warm, sunny location. Division should be done in spring or summer and the divisions should be planted in moist, well-drained soil.
