Habenaria mystacina (also called 'Mystacina Habenaria', among many other common names) is a terrestrial orchid species native to the temperate regions of Europe, Asia, and North America. It grows in moist meadows, open woodlands, and disturbed areas, and is characterized by its white or yellowish-green flowers with a long spur and a hairy ovary.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Habenaria mystacina flowers have white petals and sepals, and a yellow labellum. The seeds are small, round and black. The seedlings are small and have two cotyledons.
Cultivation and Propagation
Habenaria mystacina can be propagated by division of the rhizomes or by seed. The rhizomes should be divided in early spring and replanted in a well-drained soil. Seeds should be sown in a well-drained soil mix and kept at a temperature of 70-75°F (21-24°C). The seedlings should be transplanted when they are large enough to handle.
