Description
Anathallis nectarifera (also called Nectar-bearing Anathallis, among many other common names) is an epiphytic orchid native to Central and South America. It grows to a height of up to 10 centimeters and has small yellow flowers. It is found in humid forests and on tree branches.
Uses & Benefits
Anathallis nectarifera is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and as a medicinal plant to treat fever, headaches, and stomach ailments.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Anathallis nectarifera is a small, yellow, star-shaped flower with 4 petals. The seed is a small, round, black seed. The seedlings are small, green, and have a single pair of leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Anathallis nectarifera can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in spring or early summer in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. Division in spring or autumn is also possible. Larger clumps can be replanted direct into their permanent positions, though it is best to pot up smaller clumps and grow them on in a cold frame until they are rooting well. Plant them out in the spring.
