Description
Eucalyptus nutans (also called Nodding Gum, among many other common names) is a medium-sized tree native to Australia. It has a dense, rounded crown and smooth bark that is grey-brown in colour. It is found in dry sclerophyll forests and woodlands in the south-east of New South Wales and the south-east of Victoria.
Uses & Benefits
Eucalyptus nutans is used for its wood, which is used for timber, firewood, and fuel. It is also used for its essential oils, which are used in aromatherapy and perfumery. The leaves are used in traditional medicine and as a food source.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Eucalyptus nutans is a white, cream, or yellowish color. The seed is a small, woody capsule with a single seed inside. The seedlings are small and have a single, round, dark green leaf.
Cultivation and Propagation
Eucalyptus nutans is a fast-growing species that can reach up to 20m in height. It is best propagated from seed, which should be sown in a well-drained, sandy soil mix. The seed should be kept moist until germination occurs, which usually takes around two weeks. Once the seedlings have emerged, they should be transplanted into individual pots and grown in a sunny location. Water regularly and fertilize with a balanced fertilizer every few weeks.
