Description
Sorocea duckei (also called 'Ducke's Sorocea', among many other common names) is a small, evergreen tree native to the rainforests of Central and South America. It has a dense, upright canopy and grows up to 10 m in height. Its leaves are glossy green and oblong in shape. It is found in moist, tropical habitats and is often found in secondary forests.
Uses & Benefits
Sorocea duckei is used as an ornamental plant, for timber, and for its medicinal properties.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Sorocea duckei has small, white flowers, which are followed by small, green, ovoid-shaped fruits. The fruits contain small, black seeds which are dispersed by birds. The seedlings have a single cotyledon and are initially green in color.
Cultivation and Propagation
Sorocea duckei is a small tree that can be propagated from seed. The seeds should be sown in a well-draining soil mix and kept moist. Once the seedlings have emerged, they should be transplanted into individual containers and grown in a warm, sunny location. The trees should be watered regularly and fertilized every few months.
