Description
Genlisea nigrocaulis (also called black-stemmed corkscrew plant, among many other common names) is a carnivorous plant native to tropical Africa. It is a small, perennial herbaceous plant with a rosette of leaves that are spirally twisted and have a corkscrew-like shape. It grows in wet, marshy areas, and in shallow pools of water.
Uses & Benefits
Genlisea nigrocaulis has been used as an ornamental plant and as a source of food and fuel in some parts of the world. It is also used in traditional medicine for treating various ailments such as fever, cough, cold, and headache.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Genlisea nigrocaulis has small yellow flowers that bloom in the summer. The seeds are small and black in color. The seedlings are small and have a single stem with small, narrow leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Genlisea nigrocaulis can be propagated by division or by seed. To propagate by division, carefully remove the plant from the pot and divide the root ball into several sections, making sure that each section has a few roots attached. Plant each section in a separate pot filled with a well-draining soil mix. To propagate by seed, sow the seeds in a moist soil mix and keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate. Once the seedlings have emerged, thin them out to prevent overcrowding.
Where to Find Genlisea nigrocaulis
Genlisea nigrocaulis can be found in tropical Africa, Madagascar, and South America.
