Description
Symbolanthus superbus (also called Symbolanthus, among many other common names) is a species of flowering plant in the Primulaceae family. It is native to Venezuela and is found in tropical moist montane forests. It has a rosette of leaves and a tall, erect inflorescence with white flowers.
Uses & Benefits
Symbolanthus superbus is a popular ornamental plant, used in gardens and parks for its attractive foliage and showy flowers. It is also used in traditional medicine to treat fever, headache, and stomach ailments.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Symbolanthus superbus has white flowers with yellow anthers, and small, black, round seeds. The seedlings are small and have a single, oval-shaped cotyledon.
Cultivation and Propagation
Symbolanthus superbus can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in spring in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for their first winter. Plant out in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts. Division in spring or autumn. Larger divisions can be planted out direct into their permanent positions, though it is best to pot up the smaller divisions and grow them on in a cold frame until they are established.
