Description

Castanopsis lecomtei (also called Lecomte's Chinquapin, among many other common names) is a species of evergreen tree in the beech family. It is native to western North America, where it is found in the states of California, Oregon, and Washington. It grows in forests at elevations of 0–2,000 metres (0–6,600 ft).

Cultivation and Propagation

Castanopsis lecomtei can be propagated by seed or cuttings. Seeds should be sown in spring in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant out in late spring or early summer. Cuttings of half-ripe wood, 5 - 8cm with a heel, July/August in a frame. Plant out in late spring or early summer.
