Description
Vaccinium corymbosum (also called Blueberry, among many other common names) is a deciduous shrub that grows up to 3 meters in height. It is native to the eastern United States and is found in wooded areas, thickets, and open woods. It has small, white flowers and dark blue, edible berries.
Uses & Benefits
Vaccinium corymbosum is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and parks. It is also used as a ground cover in shady areas and as a hedge plant. The berries can be eaten raw or cooked and are high in vitamin C.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Vaccinium corymbosum is a small, white, bell-shaped flower with five petals. The seed is a small, dark brown, hard-shelled nut. The seedlings are small, dark green and have a thin stem.
Cultivation and Propagation
Vaccinium corymbosum can be propagated by seed, cuttings, or layering. Seeds should be sown in a well-drained, sandy soil. Cuttings should be taken from mature plants in late summer or early fall. Layering can be done by bending a low branch to the ground and burying it in the soil. Once rooted, the branch can be cut from the parent plant and transplanted.
