Description
Vaccinium arenarium (also called Sand Blueberry, among many other common names) is an evergreen shrub that grows up to 2 meters in height. It is native to the southeastern United States and is found in sandy areas, such as beaches, dunes, and sandhills. It has small, white flowers and dark blue, edible berries.
Uses & Benefits
Vaccinium arenarium is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and parks. It is also used as a ground cover in shady areas and as a hedge plant. The berries can be eaten raw or cooked and are high in vitamin C.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Vaccinium arenarium is a small, white, bell-shaped flower with five petals. The seed is a small, dark brown, hard-shelled nut. The seedlings are small, dark green and have a thin stem.
Cultivation and Propagation
Vaccinium arenarium can be propagated by seed, cuttings, or layering. Seeds should be sown in a well-drained, sandy soil. Cuttings should be taken from mature plants in late summer or early fall.
