Description

Rhododendron smithii (also called Smith's Rhododendron, among many other common names) is an evergreen shrub that grows up to 4m in height. It has leathery, oblong-lanceolate leaves that are up to 8cm long. Native to China, it is found in forests, woodlands and grasslands.

Cultivation and Propagation

Rhododendron smithii can be propagated by seed, cuttings, or layering. Seeds should be sown in a well-drained, sterile, medium and kept at a temperature of 70-75°F (21-24°C). Cuttings should be taken in late summer or early fall and rooted in a medium of equal parts of peat and perlite. Layering is done in late summer or early fall and the rooted stem should be separated from the parent plant in the spring.
