Description
Cupressus madeirensis (also called Madeira Cypress, among many other common names) is a medium-sized evergreen conifer native to the island of Madeira. It grows up to 25 m (82 ft) tall and has scale-like leaves and small, yellow-brown cones. It grows best in full sun and moist, well-drained soil and is often used in gardens as a specimen tree or for windbreaks.
Uses & Benefits
Cupressus madeirensis is often used as an ornamental tree, as it has a conical shape and can be easily pruned. It is also used as a windbreak or screen, and is sometimes planted in rows to act as a hedge. The wood is also used for furniture, fencing, and other woodworking projects.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Cupressus madeirensis has small, yellow-green flowers that are not very showy. The seeds are small, oval-shaped, and brown in color. Seedlings are usually slow-growing and have a pyramidal shape.
Cultivation and Propagation
Cupressus madeirensis is an evergreen conifer that can reach heights of up to 40 feet. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Propagation is best done through cuttings or layering. Cuttings should be taken in late spring or early summer and planted in a well-draining soil mix. Layering can be done in late spring or early summer by burying a branch of the plant in the soil and allowing it to take root.
