Acanthophyllum coloratum (also called 'Colored Acanthophyllum', among many other common names) is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the Mediterranean region. It has a woody rootstock and grows to a height of 30-50 cm. Its leaves are linear and its flowers are white, pink or purple and are borne in a capitulum.

Acanthophyllum coloratum is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and can be used as a ground cover. It is also used in traditional medicine to treat digestive problems, as well as to reduce inflammation and fever.

Cultivation and Propagation

Acanthophyllum coloratum can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in spring in a cold frame and the seedlings should be potted up into individual pots when they are large enough to handle. Division is best carried out in spring or autumn. Larger clumps can be replanted direct into their permanent positions, though it is best to pot up smaller clumps and grow them on in a cold frame until they are rooting well. Plant them out in the spring.
