Siphocampylus hypsophilus (also called 'High-growing Cone Orchid', among many other common names) is a species of orchid native to Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. It grows in wet montane forests at elevations of 800-2500 m. It is an epiphyte, characterized by its long, thin, pale green leaves and its yellow-green flowers.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Siphocampylus hypsophilus is yellow, with a tubular shape and a short, curved spur. The seed is a small, black, oval-shaped capsule. The seedlings are small, with a single, oval-shaped leaf.
Cultivation and Propagation
Siphocampylus hypsophilus is a shrub or small tree that can be propagated from seed or cuttings. Seeds should be sown in a well-drained, sandy soil mix and kept moist. Cuttings should be taken from semi-hardwood and should be treated with a rooting hormone before planting. The plants should be grown in full sun or partial shade and should be watered regularly.
