Description
Asterella dognyensis (also called Asterella dognyensis, among many other common names) is a small liverwort species found in tropical Africa. It has a thalloid growth form and is typically found growing on rocks, soil and tree trunks. It is native to Cameroon and other parts of tropical Africa.
Uses & Benefits
Asterella dognyensis is used in traditional Chinese medicine and is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties. It is also used as an ornamental plant in gardens and as a groundcover.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Asterella dognyensis has small, yellow-green flowers with four petals. The seeds are round and dark brown. The seedlings are small and have two cotyledons.
Cultivation and Propagation
Asterella dognyensis is a small, evergreen, terrestrial liverwort that grows in moist, shady places. It can be propagated by spore dispersal or by division of the thallus. The spores should be sown on a moist, sterile, nutrient-rich medium and kept in a cool, humid environment. Division of the thallus can be done by carefully separating the thallus into smaller pieces and replanting them in moist, nutrient-rich soil.
Where to Find Asterella dognyensis
Asterella dognyensis can be found in the British Isles, Scandinavia, and the Alps.
