Description
Diplazium filamentosum (also called Filamentous Spleenwort, among many other common names) is a fern native to the eastern United States and Canada. It is an evergreen, clump-forming fern with pinnate leaves and a creeping rhizome. It is typically found in moist, shady areas such as woodlands, streambanks, and rocky slopes.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Diplazium filamentosum has a small, white flower with a single, long-stalked spikelet. The seed is a small, dark brown, oblong-shaped seed with a smooth surface. The seedlings are small, with a single, thin, upright stem and a single, long, narrow leaf.
Cultivation and Propagation
Diplazium filamentosum can be propagated by division of the rhizomes or by spores. It prefers moist, well-drained soils in full sun or partial shade. It is tolerant of a wide range of soil types and pH levels, but prefers moist, well-drained soils. It is drought tolerant once established.
