Description
Hieracium osiliae (also called Osilia hawkweed, among many other common names) is a perennial herbaceous plant in the family Asteraceae. It has yellow flowers with a single yellow center and a toothed leaf margin. It is native to Europe, and it typically grows in meadows, grasslands, and disturbed areas.
Uses & Benefits
Hieracium osiliae is used as an ornamental plant in gardens and as a ground cover. It is also used to make herbal teas and as a medicinal plant for treating skin diseases.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Hieracium osiliae is yellow and daisy-like, with a central disc of yellow disc florets surrounded by yellow ray florets. The seed is a small, dark brown achene, and the seedling is a rosette of leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Hieracium osiliae can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in late winter or early spring in a cold frame or in a seedbed. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. Division is best carried out in the spring, as the plants come into growth, although it can also be done in the autumn. Larger clumps can be divided using two forks, the divisions being planted out direct into their permanent positions.
Where to Find Hieracium osiliae
Hieracium osiliae is native to the Mediterranean region. It can be found in rocky hillsides and dry meadows.
