It has spiny, lobed leaves and large, showy purple flower heads that bloom in the summer. It typically grows in grasslands, meadows, and disturbed areas.
Uses & Benefits
Cirsium spectabile is used in landscaping as an ornamental plant, to attract pollinators, and as a medicinal herb for treating skin diseases.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Cirsium spectabile is a pink to purple, 5-lobed corolla. The seeds are small, black and oblong. The seedlings are short and erect.
Cultivation and Propagation
Cirsium spectabile is a perennial plant that is best propagated by division in the spring. It prefers full sun to partial shade and does best in moist, well-drained soil. It is not tolerant of drought and should be watered regularly. It can be propagated by seed, but this is not recommended as it is difficult to get the seeds to germinate.
