Description
Philodendron purpureoviride (also called Red-Leaf Philodendron, among many other common names) is a species of evergreen, perennial, climbing shrub native to Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. It has large, leathery, glossy, purple-green leaves that are deeply lobed and can reach up to 30 cm in length. It is found in tropical rainforests, growing on trees and rocks.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Philodendron purpureoviride is a small, white spathe. The seed is a small, black, shiny, smooth-surfaced berry. The seedlings are small and have oval-shaped leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Philodendron purpureoviride can be propagated by division or stem cuttings. To propagate by division, carefully separate the rhizomes and replant in a well-draining potting mix. To propagate by stem cuttings, cut a stem just below a leaf node and place in a moist potting mix. Keep the soil moist and provide bright, indirect light. It should take several weeks for roots to form.
