Description
Homalomena atrox (also called Atrocious Homalomena, among many other common names) is an epiphytic herb native to Southeast Asia. It has a short stem and grows up to 15 cm tall. It grows in rainforests and wet sclerophyll forests.
Uses & Benefits
Homalomena atrox is used as an ornamental plant, for erosion control, and for its medicinal properties, including its anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antibacterial effects.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Homalomena atrox has white flowers with six petals and six stamens. Its seeds are small and black, and its seedlings have two long, narrow leaves.
Cultivation and Propagation
Homalomena atrox is a perennial that grows in full sun to partial shade. It prefers moist, well-drained soil. Propagation is done by division of the clumps or by seed. Plant the clumps in the fall, about 4 inches deep and 4 inches apart. Seeds should be planted in the spring in a well-drained, sandy soil.
