Farm Gate of Venezuela’s Cocoa Beans

The farm gate price of Venezuela cocoa beans was 72.38 Bolívares ($2) per kg in March 2024, but direct sales to chocolate factories earned growers 253.33 Bolívares ($7) per kg.

Traders usually earn a simple mark up on top of the farm gate price. The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) put this rate at 8%.

The old No.1 Cocoa Producer in the World

Venezuela used to be the no.1 cocoa-producing nation around 1800 but by 2024, it was producing less than 1% of world cocoa. The output in the year 1800 was 20,000 tonnes a year but through the middle of the 20th century, this amount had halved to 10,000 tonnes per year. In 2024, unofficial total production is thought to be in the range of 15,000 and 20,000 tonnes per year.

Trinitario and Criollo Cacao Beans

Despite losing out on the production front, Venezuela today produces some of the world’s finest cocoa beans. The northwest South American nation grows the Criollo cacao bean variety, which some call the “champagne” of the cocoa world because of its superb quality. This variety makes only 1% of the global cocoa harvest because it is rare.

Besides, there is also the Trinitario cacao variety, whose global output is 10%. Again, Venezuela produces the world’s bulk of this variety but in small quantities.
