Peru exploits robust agricultural export opportunities in Asia, Brazil

Peru has announced robust agricultural exports ahead of the November 15, 2024 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Lima.

The South American nation saw its agricultural shipments to its biggest destination, China, rise by 3% in 2023, according to Gestión.

This bilateral trade is slated to expand to feature chestnuts, frozen mango and pecans, per an APEC-affiliated announcement by President Dina Boluarte.

The addition of the above garden produce will help Lima magnify its agricultural exports to China from the US$420 million of 2023. Key produce that propel this impressive turnover currently include grapes, blueberries and western markets-inclined fresh avocado.

Table grapes in particular have come to define Peru’s position as a world-beating exporter, especially to China.

The vineyard fruit could get even bigger after the inauguration of the Chancay Port, a major Latin American export gateway. According to Vivero Viñedo, a long-term player in the grapevine grafting industry, this Belt and Road Initiative-built port could revolutionize grape trade.

Brazil Toes the Apple Line

China is by no means having the whole of Peru’s pie, for Brazil across the border has also secured a major apple import contract.

Lima has approved the export of its apples to Brazil, marking the eighth such agricultural nod to its neighbor in 2024 alone.

According to the government of Brazil, this climaxes 2024’s Peruvian export authorizations that have previously included yerba mate and cassava meal.

In its part, Brazil exports such farm produce as soybeans, forestry and meat across the border, worth US$724 million in 2023.

Thus, Peru’s agricultural exports are benefiting from the oncoming APEC summit, the launch of Chancay port and trade ties with Brazil. This is all the more reason to check out the larger picture of the country’s agricultural export statistics, below.

Peru Agricultural Export Statistics

Peru is the world’s biggest exporter of grapes, a top shipper of avocados, and a major world player in agricultural trade. According to the U.S.’ International Trade Administration, Peru has recorded over tenfold growth in its agricultural exports between 2000 and 2023. While such shipments only brought a value of US$645 million in 2000, they had nevertheless climbed to US$10.5 billion by 2023. The secret to this surge are huge investments, especially in land expansion under valuable export crops. The area of this export-oriented valuable farmland increased fourfold in the two decades ending 2023, to 200,000 hectares.

How much grapes does Peru export annually

The south American nation perennially ranks either first or second globally in table grape shipments. Indeed, data by OEC ranks Peruvian grape exports top in the world in value at $1.34 billion, as of 2022. This marks a 16% share in the global export market of the table fruit.

How do avocados from Peru rank worldwide in export value

Avocados from Peru ranked third worldwide in terms of the 2023 export value, at $963.4 million. This represented a 13.2%  global share of the fruit’s shipments, a value only behind Mexico’s 39% and the Netherlands’14.9%.
