On May 10, Sichuan Mai District took the lead in opening the first large area for sickle harvesting of wheat this year in the country. On the same day, the Sichuan Dayi Demonstration Zone and Chongzhou Demonstration Zone carried out the showcase of large-scale green, high-quality and efficient production of wheat in tandem with the acceptance of 100 mu of wheat area. The measured production results are 516.9 kg per mu (per. 0.165 acres) at the Chongzhou demonstration field and 507.5 kg per mu at the Dayi demonstration field. When Yu Maoqun, the leader of the acceptance expert group and a researcher at the Chengdu Institute of Biology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, announced the results of the production test, the faces of the experts and grain growers present were full of joy. This output is much higher than the average yield of 315 kg of wheat per mu in Chengdu in 2021.
In May, the wheat area in the north was still grouting, the land of Shu Township was already blowing the wheat waves, and the wheat area in Sichuan ushered in the return of harvest particles. At present, the large-scale harvest of wheat in Sichuan has been pulled from the south to the north. In 2023, the total area of wheat sown in Sichuan was about 88.805 mu, a slight increase over last year, accounting for nearly 60% of the sowing area in the southwest wheat area.
To build a higher level of “Tianfu Granary” in the new era, Sichuan wheat is ready to go. In southern Sichuan, large grain growers rely on good policies. The former “desolate slopes” and abandoned land in Dongxing District, Zizhong County and other places in Neijiang City have planted “Chinese grain”, and the wheat planting area has increased in recovery. Chengdu Plain, relying on the advantages of the modern national agricultural industrial park and the Dujiangyan irrigation area of Guanghan City, broke the record of 600 kilograms for the first time in 100 mu of wheat in Southwest China last year. It used new varieties and new technologies to be at the forefront of the province. In northern Sichuan, Zhao Zhendong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a famous wheat breeding expert who has visited Sichuan many times, praised Sichuan wheat breeding and production.
The large-scale early harvest of wheat in Sichuan is, on the one hand, affected by the climatic characteristics of the southwest region, and on the other hand, it benefits from a strong wheat scientific research team in Sichuan Province. The high yield of the crop in Sichuan is obtained in low-light areas, with a fertility period of only more than 180 days. Zhao Zhendong said that the breeding period of wheat in Henan, Shandong and other places is more than 220 days, and that in foreign countries is more than 300 days. The short breeding period can be so high, indicating that the breeding of multi-resistant and synthetic wheat in Sichuan has reached the international leading level.
Tang Yonglu, a post scientist of the national wheat industry technology system and a researcher at the Crop Research Institute of the Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences, said that through multi-point research in the province, it was found that the wheat color was uniform and clean, indicating that the occurrence of diseases and pests this year was very light. In addition, the flowering period of wheat this year is advanced, the filling time is extended, the grain weight will not be low, and the yield is expected to rise steadily.
