KHANH HOA: Khanh Son durian is preparing to enter the full harvest season, traders from all over the world flock to the gardens to deposit at the highest price ever.
Durian prices increase day by day
These days, durian farmers in Khanh Son district, Khanh Hoa province are busy taking care of their orchards to prepare for the main harvest. Before that, at the end of June and beginning of July, a small number of areas of early ripening durian in the western communes including Son Lam, Thanh Son and Son Binh of this district were basically harvested and sold at a low price, at an average of 50,000 – 60,000 VND (from $2.11)/kg.
Mr. Le Anh Quang, a durian farmer in Lien Hoa village, Son Binh commune, said that it is expected that in about 20 days, the main season of durians, mainly like Monthong and Ri6, will reach harvesting stage. However, for about 2 weeks now, the Khanh Son durian area has been bustling with traders everywhere, including Chinese traders who have flocked to the durian gardens in the area to buy a lot of deposits, pushing up durian prices.
According to Mr. Le Anh Quang, currently, depending on the quality of the fruits in the given durian garden, you can pay a deposit to buy buckets with different prices. However, the average is about 55,000 VND ($2.3)/kg for Ri6 and from 70,000-75,000 VND($2.96-3.17)/kg for Monthong, the highest ever.
“Every year, Ri6 durian only ranges from 35,000-42,000 VND($1.48-1.78)/kg, while Monthong last year had the highest price, only 52,000-53,000 VND($2.20-2.24)/kg. Thanks to the high price of durian, Khanh Son people are very excited. Many gardens have so far fixed the selling price and received the deposit,” Quang shared.
Similarly in the durian growing area in Ba Cuong Bac commune, many gardeners here have also fixed the price of durian for traders to buy. According to Mr. Le Vinh, a durian farmer in Tha Mang village, Ba Cuong Bac commune, the price of durian being paid by the gardeners to buy buckets ranges from 72,000-75,000 VND ($3-3.17)/kg. With this durian price, everyone is excited because the harvest will bring a high profit. Durian yield this year, according to farmers, is the same as every year, averaging 15-20 tons/ha for trees 6-7 years old and older. “With the investment cost of 1 hectare of about 300 million, if the above price is sold, durian farmers will profit with billions,” Vinh shared.
Like the durian garden planted with many other fruit trees by Mr. Yen’s family, in Lien Hoa village of Son Binh commune with a total area ofabout 30 hectares, which is about 5 hectares in the business period, this crop is expected to yield nearly 100 tons. Mr. Yen said that some areas of durian ripen early. The family has harvested about 30 tons. With the recent selling price ranging from 50,000-65,000 VND($2.11-2.75)/kg, his family earned about 2 billion VND ($84,576).
High price thanks to the planting area code
Mr. Do Nhi Huy, Head of Khanh Son Agriculture and Rural Development Department, said that the whole district has about 2,500 hectares of durian, of which 1,200 hectares are in business. It is expected that the total output of this year’s harvest will amount to about 15,000 tons.
Although it has not yet entered the harvest season, so far about 50-60% of growers have received a deposit and fixed the selling price of Monthong durians to traders with an average price of over 70,000 VND ($2.96)/kg, especially with key gardens with price up to 80,000 VND($3.38)/kg.
Regarding the price of durian this year, the highest purchase ever, according to Mr. Do Nhi Huy as well as many farmers, is thanks to the planting area code. This a code that traders, including Chinese traders, use to search for durian. Traders buy, fix the price and wait for the harvest date to officially export to the Chinese market.
Also according to Head of Agriculture and Rural Development Department in Khanh Son, up to now, the whole district has 4 durian growing area codes licensed by the General Department of Customs of China. In addition, there are 22 registered durian area codes, of which 6 have just been checked online by the General Department of Customs in coordination with the Khanh Hoa Plantation and Plant Protection Sub-Department.
It is known that in order to maintain the planting area codes, Khanh Son district’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has, over time, promoted propaganda, training, and guidance on techniques for planting, caring and harvesting durian in accordance with the regulations. At the same time, it promotes support for people to produce durian in the direction of VietGAP. Besides, it mobilizes households to promote production linkages and synchronize production processes. From there, farmers gradually meet the criteria for granting planting area codes such as area, production process, product quality…
