On July 12, Nonghyup Economic Holdings held a parliamentary debate at the National Assembly Museum to discuss various treatment methods for livestock manure in line with the carbon neutrality era and to respond to rapid market changes.
Hosted by Nonghyup Economic Holdings, Farmers’ Newspaper, and the Korea Pork Association, the debate was co-hosted by lawmakers Lee Hae-gon and Kim Hyung-dong, and brought together stakeholders including the government, experts, and producer organizations to discuss various opinions and ways to improve laws and systems.
□ At the event, discussions were held on the achievements and future challenges of diversifying domestic livestock manure treatment methods, including the introduction of a new treatment method for livestock manure (biochar). There was also discussion on the substitution effect of fossil fuels for solid fuels and integrated biogas operation.
□ On the other hand, there were opinions that complex and demanding licensing regulations in the process of installing facilities and the upshot problems of acceptability by the residents are acting as obstacles to market expansion. This is making it necessary to improve related systems to respond to the rapidly changing market conditions.
Mr. Ahn Byung-woo, Director of Livestock Economy at Nonghyup Economic Holdings, said, “We expect that this discussion will be of great help in establishing strategies for carbon neutrality and greenhouse gas reduction in the livestock sector, and in the future, Nonghyup will seek more practical responses and make continuous efforts to respond to the rapidly changing livestock environment at home and abroad.”
