Moldova will not restrict grain imports from Ukraine, but wants to safeguard farmers’ interests. How?

Moldova will not restrict grain imports from Ukraine, but will introduce mechanisms to secure the interests of farmers-such a decision was made by the Moldovan government on Wednesday, May 10.

The information was reported by the wgospodarka.pl portal. It reads that on Wednesday late in the evening, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry and at the same time Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of Moldova, Vladimir Bolea, conveyed the government’s decision to abandon its intention to restrict imports of Ukrainian cereals.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry of the Republic of Moldova said in a communiqué today (May 11, 2023) that the decision was made after talks with farmers. Apparently, however, not all agricultural organizations agreed-farmers from the Forța Fermierilor association want a halt to grain imports, as reported today in the article “Moldovan farmers demand ban on grain imports from Ukraine.”

According to Moldova’s Ministry of Agriculture, Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolea declared that the government is focused on solving farmers’ economic problems, listing the measures that will be taken in this regard.

“We have agreed that we will monitor grain imports from Ukraine to prevent a potential grain invasion. In this way, we will be able to intervene when the flow increases significantly. A similar mechanism has been developed in Romania. At the same time, we will develop economic measures to reduce production costs. It was decided that we will supplement the AIPA fund by 100 million lei ($22.18 million) at the first budget adjustment. The money will be used to subsidize excise taxes on diesel fuel, which will allow farmers to reduce the expenses they had last fall. At the same time, we will develop a program to subsidize the cost of fertilizers used in sowing agricultural land in the fall of 2022,” Minister Bolea said as quoted in a Moldovan Ministry of Agriculture release.
