Germany: Fewer large cattle slaughters in Schleswig-Holstein

Kiel, Germany: In 2022, meat production in the slaughterhouses of Schleswig-Holstein sank again. The decline is due to fewer pigs and fewer cattle slaughters, according to the Statistics Office North.

Compared to the previous year 2021, the number of commercially slaughtered cattle fell by 7.3 percent or 19,443 animals to 246,208 animals. The slaughter volume fell by 7,414 ton (t)  (minus 8.5 percent) to 80,275 t. The numbers of slaughtered cows and bulls are particularly attached to the decline of slaughtered animals and slaughtered quantity.

For the cows, the slaughter volume fell by 16.1 percent (5,362 t) to 27,896 t compared to the previous year. The number of slaughtered animals fell by 16,435 animals (minus 15.5 percent) to 89,359 cows. The number of slaughtered calves, on the other hand, increased by 5,500 to 13,642 animals within a year (plus 67.6 percent). The reason for this is, among other things, the beginning of the slewing of rose calves in the district of Segeberg in May 2022. The number of commercially slaughtered bulls decreased by 4.7 percent or 3,490 to 70,134 animals between 2021 and 2022. This also led to a decrease in the slaughter quantity by 1,193 t (minus 4.2 percent) to 27,337 t.

The number of slaughtered pigs fell by 7.9 percent (93,408 animals) in 2022 compared to 1.08 million animals compared to the previous year. Accordingly, the slaughter quantity fell by 8.8 percent (minus 9,989 t) to 103,703 t. This significant decrease is due, among other things, to the declining fattening pig populations.

In 2022, the number of lambs slaughtered fell significantly by 12,536 animals or 10.2 percent to 110,091 animals. The annual slaughter number of the remaining sheep (mother sheep, mutton, goats) was 18,223 animals. The goat slaughters were at a low level with 921 animals. The slaughter of horses with 139 animals was just as low in 2022.
