It’s more reassuring to eat pineapple! China’s first national industry standard for freshly cut pineapple processing has been approved 

Recently, the Department of Agricultural Product Quality & Safety Supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs issued the Notice on Issuing the Project Plan for the Revision of the National and Industrial Standards for Agriculture in 2023. Among them, the “Technical Regulations for Freshly Cut Pineapple Processing” declared by the Institute of Silkworm Industry and Agricultural Products Processing of the Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences (hereinafter referred to as the “Processing Institute of the Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences”) has been officially approved for national agricultural and industry-level standards. This is also the first national industry standard for freshly cut pineapple processing, which will fill the domestic fresh-cut pineapple processing technology.

Researcher Xu Yujuan, director of the Processing Institute of the Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the leader of the fruit and vegetable processing innovation team, summarized that: freshly cut pineapples are ready-to-eat or ready-to-use fresh fruit and vegetables products made through the process of selection, washing, peeling, segmentation, disinfection, packaging, e.t.c. Pineapples have the characteristics of convenient eating and can satisfy people’s needs for vitamins and minerals. He said that the nutritional demand for dietary fiber has broad market prospects, too.

There are huge differences in the physiological characteristics of different fruits and vegetables after their harvest, particularly the many varieties of pineapple raw materials to consider, besides the different characteristics of fresh-cut produce undergoing processing. In view of these differences, the fruit and vegetable processing innovation team of the Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences has developed automatic processing, quality and safety control systems for extending the shelf life of fresh-cut pineapple, and researched and developed automatic peeling, specification cutting and cold chain storage and preservation technology. Additionally, the team has developed a photodynamic synergistic sterilization technology and high-value processing technology for peeled pineapple, e.t.c. Some of the technologies have been transformed into scientific and technological achievements and industrialized in local enterprises such as Guangdong Golden Pineapple Food Science and Technology Company, alongside Fragrant Four Seasons Company in Xuwen.

The approved project  dubbed “Fresh-cut pineapple processing technology regulations,” comes with the main technical content. This content includes the scope of application, normative references, terms and definitions, raw material requirements, production environment, processing criteria, storage terms, finished product inspection items, health management protocols, quality management aspects, markings and other aspects. “I hope to establish a set of fresh-cut pineapple processing technical specifications suitable for nationwide general use on the targeted guidance of the emerging fresh-cut pineapple industry, for the healthy development of the industry; to promote orderly competition, and to protect product quality and safety.” Xu Yujuan said.
