Popular Tuna species in the United States
The US not only produces fresh commercial tuna but also imports about 300 million pounds yearly in canned tuna products, making tuna one of the best known seafood in the United States.
The following tuna species dominate the American tuna market:
1. Albacore Tuna
Perhaps the most popular tuna species in the United States is albacore tuna (Thunnus alulanga). Part of the appeal lies in the medium size of the fish with a weight of about 80 pounds and a length of 41 inches. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), much of albacore tuna comes from the northern and southern Pacific regions. Hence its popular market name of “US wild caught Pacific albacore.” The Atlantic also produces the species in less quantities than the Pacific fisheries.
The current price of Albacore Tuna is between $10.69 and $41.56 per kg.
2. Skipjack Tuna
There are two skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) varieties in US waters, namely Atlantic skipjack tuna and Pacific skipjack tuna. Both have a similar appearance of a streamlined body without scales other than at the back of the head. They weigh at least 70 pounds and measure 4 feet at maturity. US wild caught Pacific skipjack tuna are more in numbers than their Atlantic counterparts.
The current price of Skipjack Tuna is between $23.23 and $61.8 per kg.
3. Yellowfin Tuna
Big, torpedo-shaped and weighing 400 pounds, Atlantic and Pacific yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) abound in US waters.
The current price of Yellowfin Tuna is between $29.50 and $54.97 per kg.
4. Atlantic and Pacific Bluefin Tuna
The bluefin tuna comes in two subspecies, namely Atlantic bluefin (Thunnus thynnus) and Pacific bluefin (Thunnus orientalis). The Atlantic type is the biggest among all US tuna species, with a weight of 2000 pounds and a length of 13 feet.
Bluefin tuna costs more than other species because of its size and rare catches.
The current price of Atlantic and Pacific Bluefin Tuna is about $53.90 and $142.98 per kg.
US Congress Considers $600 Million to Boost US Tuna Fisheries in South Pacific
While renewing its exclusive access to south Pacific tuna fisheries, the US Congress was from April 8, 2024 considering a $600 million assistance to the South Pacific Tuna Treaty. The funds will be utilized between 2024 and 2034. Channeling the funds to the fisheries will help American islands such as Hawaii increase their tuna production.
The south Pacific is one of the most important sources of US tuna. This is why the United States signed a treaty in 1988 with 16 Pacific countries and islands from Fiji to Australia for exclusive tuna fishing rights. The south Pacific abounds with yellowfin and albacore tuna.
