US Salmon Export Prices - Historical, Trends and Prediction
The export price per kilogram of Salmon from the US has been steadily increasing. In 2017, for example, the price was 4.59 US$ per kg, and in 2021 it was 5.71 US$ per kg. The highest price was in 2020, when it reached 6.04 US$ per kg. Based on this trend, it is predicted that the export price per kilogram of Salmon from the US in 2025 will be 10.5 US$ per kg, and in 2026 it will be 12.87 US$ per kg.
The Norwegian Salmon Effect on US Salmon Export Prices
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the US salmon market keeps a close watch on the changes in major salmon supply sources. These include the supply and price changes of Norwegian salmon. This is because the price of salmon from the leading export country, Norway, normally influences American prices.
A look at 2024 shows that US export prices for salmon have been gaining since the year’s start, echoing those in Norway. In January 2024, for example, the price reached $10.21 per kg, up from $8.28 per kg in December 2023. In February 2024, the price notched even higher, to $10.27 per kg.
The week-on-week export price climbed by 6.6% from NOK 126.90 ($11.79) per kg in week 4 of March 2024, to NOK 135.28 ($12.46) per kg in week 1, April 2024.
American salmon export prices were on a downward curve at $8.65 per kg in June 2024, then $7.56 a kg in July and $8.72 a kg in August 2024, according to ITC data. This marked a slight slip from the highest point of $9.65 a kg in May.
The price depreciation is a part of a global trend influenced by large supplies of small-sized Norwegian salmon. The supplies impelled Norway’s export prices to stay down between June and mid-September 2024.
Interestingly, export prices in Norway rebounded by 1.4% in week 37 ending September 17 to NOK 74.12 ($6.80) per kg. However, this improvement was still half that of week 1 of April at $12.46 per kg. By early October 2024, the price had reduced to NOK 59.29 ($5.44) per kg for small-sized whole salmon, at Nasdaq Index.
If the price weakening trend continues in Norway, it will also continue affecting global rates, including in the United States.

The main types of salmon and how they compare in prices
Fresh or frozen salmon is a good option for those who do not love expensive prepared salmon. Your best bet for fresh salmon is if you live near production centres off the coasts of Maine, Oregon or Alaska.
King salmon is quite costly at more than 25 dollars a pound while Atlantic salmon can set you back anywhere between 10 and 15 dollars a pound.
Sockeye salmon prices range around 9 dollars and above per pound.
Wild caught salmon is costlier, sometimes 3 to 4 times more than farm-raised salmon!
Retail price outlook for common Salmon species in US
In May 2024, US salmon retail prices were in the range of $13.87 to $74.50 per pound or $30.5 to $163.9 per kg. Perhaps this is because the month coincides with the end of the off-season when supplies start getting low. The US salmon season falls between May and Mid-October each year, specifically for king salmon species. Some species like wild caught sockeye salmon and wild caught pink salmon only become available starting June or July.
By mid-October 2024 when the harvest of most species was ending, US salmon prices had reduced slightly. The per pound prices ranged from $12.00 for Atlantic salmon to $79.95 for Copper River king salmon or from $26.4 to $175.89 per kg. The slight increase in the price of king salmon in October reflects the fact that the harvest of this species ends by July 31 and supplies begin tightening in fall. This is especially true in Alaska whose king salmon season runs mid-May through end July. Alaska is one of the biggest sources of US salmon. So, any increase or decrease in supplies of salmon from Alaska affects nationwide prices.
Here are the indicative 2024 retail prices for a select US salmon species that are common in the market:
Live Atlantic salmon cost around $23.99 per pound, while frozen Atlantic salmon fillet was priced at $13.87 per pound. In the six months in-between ending October, the price of live Atlantic salmon fillet increased to about $29.99. However, the price of whole Atlantic salmon decreased to around $12.00.
Live Pacific Northwest salmon fillet cost $32.50 per pound at Pure Food Fish Market, while smoked Pacific Northwest had a price tag of $69.99 per pound. The lowest fillet price would later reduce to about $29.99 per pound half a year later, in October 2024.
Fresh Copper River king salmon was priced at $32.50 per pound either as steak, fillet or portion at Pure Food Fish Market. Whole Copper River king salmon on the other hand cost about $74.50 per pound. By October 2024, the price of whole Copper River king salmon had increased to about $79.95.
Alaskan Sockeye salmon fillets or single portions from Alaska were costing $32 per pound on the higher side in April 2024. While the lowest price in April was $13.29 per pound at outlets like Walmart, the equivalent in October 2024 was $10.15 a pound, a 3-dollar decrease. At the higher end, the price in October was $33.33, almost similar to April's price.
