Total pecan production and farmgate prices
The United States posted a decrease of 12% in all nuts’ production in 2022 in comparison to 2021 due to drought. Pecans hit 275 million pounds, slightly more than the 2021 figure of 256.45 million pounds but were less than the 2020 output of 304.05 million pounds. The production in 2023 more than made up for the previous years’ deficits, with USDA-NASS giving an estimate of 306.75 million pounds.
Pecans prices at the farmgate also fell by 20% to nearly those of 2020 levels. While the price in 2021 was $2.16 per pound, that in 2020 was $1.42 a pound, whereas in 2022 it was $1.80 per pound. The pecan price per pound 2023 at the farmgate has held stable at $1.80 per pound. In early October 2024, farm gate pecans prices stood between $1.50 and $2.00 per pound.
Top pecan-producing states in the US
Pecans grow mainly in the southern states and are harvested from September through October each year. Georgia leads in production and accounts for over 33% of national output. Below are the production figures for the five leading states as per the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) in January, 2023:
1. Georgia: 125.5 million pounds
2. New Mexico: 79 million pounds
3. Arizona: 37 million pounds
4. Texas: 25.5 million pounds
5. Oklahoma: 7.5 million pounds
Pecan prices 2023 in the United States fell victim to rain after harvest in November and producers had to rush them into wholesale before the weather worsened. The weather did not affect the prices, however, because most were already contracted at a stable price of at least 1.85 per pound for nuts with over 52% meat yield.
USDA reported a wholesale price range of between $1.8 and $1.90 per pound for pecans in Atlanta, Georgia, on sale November 2023.
Out of these sales, Cape Fear pecans with up to 54% meat yield sold for between $1.85 and $1.90 per pound. The wholesale size range was 50 to 54 pecan kernels per packet at the minimum order.
Other states, including Texas, Arizona and Oklahoma have reported stability in pecan prices in 2023, at between $2 and $3 per pound for in-shell pecans. Shelled pecans, however, cost an extra dollar, at $4 per pound.
Best-selling pecans in the US market
While there are 13 different varieties of pecans in the United States, four, together with seedlings, have proven the best-sellers. The market/wholesale price of pecan per pound 2023 reflects the relative demand of these nuts, as follows:
1. Cape Fear
A relative newcomer into the nut market, Cape Fear inherits the name of an eponymous river in North Carolina. Prices of November 2023 for this butter-flavored nut variety was the highest of any nuts, at $1.85 per pound and above.
2. Desirable
Current Retail Price: $6.6 - $9.1 per pound
This variety is a cross from the turn of the 20th century by Carl F,Forkert. It is not clear which two cultivars of pecans bred this market favorite. Often sold in blended packages with Cape Fear .
3. Schley
Current Retail Price: $7 - $8 per pound
This prolific variety has origins in the Southern states but is now available en-masse across the US. As such, Schley is arguably one of the oldest pecan varieties in the country. It is easy to crack, has a soft brown kernel and feels oily on the hand.
4. Stuart
Current Retail Price: $6 - $7 per pound
Easily the most popular and widely cultivated pecan in the state of Georgia, the Stuart exudes a rich delicate aroma which suits candy-making.The only downside is the hard shell which needs strong input to crack!
5. Seedlings
Only native seedlings make a cut in the market and they sell at unspecified contract prices. The packet size per sale is between 75 and 80 seedlings, according to market figures in Georgia.
For those who like to indulge in fancy pecans, the price in 2024 for these is moderately expensive. Pecan halves, for instance, cost $13.50 per 12 oz or $18 per pound. Roasted pecans, on the other hand, started at $9.99 per 8 oz or $19.98 per pound.
