US Peach Production Down in 2023/24 Season, Caused by Winter Freeze
A late winter freeze in Georgia and South Carolina, and a wet 2023 spring in California dealt a blow to US’ peach production. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)’s estimate in September 2023, peach/nectarine production was to fall to 574,000 tonnes in the 2023/24 season. This is against a 5-year average of 650,000 to 710,000 tonnes per year.
But things are looking good in some peach producing regions like Georgia for the 2024-25 season. Statistics by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution showed that the third-biggest peach-producing state, Georgia, was expecting a “full crop” in the 2024-25 season after losing 90% of its crop in 2023. A return to normal weather conditions and the lack of a late freeze contributed to this note of hope. Georgia peaches amount to an annual average of 130 million pounds.
While Georgia is on the minds of many when it comes to peaches due to its “Peach State'' moniker, it is nevertheless not the leading peach-producing state. California and South Carolina lead in first and second place respectively.
2024/25 US Peach Season Expects Upward Production
The US peach and nectarines production is back in good shape for the 2024-25 season, with production up by 15,000 tonnes, year-on-year. The U.S. Department of Agriculture in a September 2024 report projected a 2024-25 harvest of 669,000 tonnes, a slight rebound from the 40-year low of the 2023-24 season. This output will propel annual exports of peaches to 60,000 tonnes, a 30% yearly increase.
