According to the U.S. National Statistics Service (NASS), Georgia led the goat count by state in the January 2024 census with 58,900 head, ahead of Florida’s 44,900 head. Florida had the most milk goats totaling 12,300 head, more than double that of second-placed Georgia with 6,900 head. For market and meat goats, Georgia led the count with 52,000 head, while Florida came second with 43,000 head.

The average doe weighs 94 kg while males average 114 kg. Most buyers of meat goats go for grass fed goats. The most typical breeds are the South African Boer, French Alpine and Tennessee Meat Goat, among others.
3. Milk Goats

In the United States, Ohio and other northern states are known for rearing dairy goats. The American Dairy Goat Association cites that a typical dairy goat weighs 175 pounds. The universal range for weight is 125-175 pounds for dairy goats.
