US almond prices drop to 20-year low
US almond prices dropped to a 20-year low in August 2023, according to Mintec's price benchmark, fulled by worries over huge ending stocks among sellers even as the new harvest approached.
Sellers with large quantities started to clear their stock and create room for the new harvest, and this contributed to the price drop.
Per USDA Objective Almond Measurement, the 2023/24 season may produce 2.50 billion pounds and the total stocks could go upwards of 3 billion considering the remaining stock.
While almonds can sell for as little as $1.20 a pound to as high as 4.33 at the farm gate per Merlo Farming Group’s 2023 provisional data, they retail higher in consumer markets.
Quick guide to buying Almonds in US
When buying almonds in the US, these are the common options you will come across:
Almonds in shell for wholesale cost least when you order bulk orders of between 11 pounds and 27 pounds or above, with most stores.
California almonds are perennially some of the most popular in the United States. The Almonds Board of California cites that the state produces 80% of the global almond crop. With the harvest in October over, prices here have gone down and 2023 may pass as an easy year for buying the state’s almonds.
Salted and unsalted almonds is another option for buying or selling the nuts. Given that salt by weight does not add mass to nuts, you will find that dry salted almonds cost a little less than unsalted almonds.
