British potatoes prices rise year-on-year
With a dip in production in the 2022-23 year of about 6.4% from the 2021-22 period, British potato prices have been up year-on-year. UK potato export prices, for instance, rose by 13% in May 2023 to $640 a tonne from the previous month's tally.
The latest harvest in 2023 in autumn did little to ameliorate the situation. Demand has shot up quite fast so that each batch from the fresh harvest is finding ready customers.
This is despite the overall appetite for potatoes in the UK having gone significantly down over the years. Mintec price benchmark stated back in July, 2023 that UK potato acreage shrunk to 115,000 hectares in 2022 and this could decrease further this year.

Similarly, Grade 1 White Packing potato benchmark also increased by 627% from 2022’s to trade at £400 a tonne.
A cold winter and summer drought in 2022 sparked the trend of shrinking production.
