Chemlali and Chetoui Olive Varieties
Olive oil is derived from ripe olives that grow in thousands of olive groves in Tunisia. Farmers rely primarily on two olive cultivars that are prized for their quality oil, namely Chemlali and Chetoui.
Chemlali accounts for 70% of all olives on Tunisian farms while Chetoui represents 10%. The rest of the oil comes from imported varieties such as Arbosana from Spain and Koroneki from Greece.
Tunisia’s Olive Oil Production is Over 2500 Years Old
Since the 8th century BC, Tunisia has been producing olive oil. The first olive grove trees came here through Hannibal and his army. Indeed, the world’s oldest olive tree today is in Tunisia and it dates back to Hannibal’s time. After this date, olive planting increased in North Africa through Phoenician traders from ancient olive regions including modern-day Lebanon and Syria.
Down memory lane, olive oil has become a key export of Tunisia. In 2022, Tunisia exported $801 million in olive oil and its fractions, the fifth largest in the world after Spain, Italy, Portugal and Greece. The export value represented 4.31% of national exports of all goods in that year.
Tunisia is also the world’s fastest growing market for this essential oil product. According to Tourism Tunisia, the fast growth owes to the high quality olive oil that the country produces. The dry Mediterranean climate enables olives to grow here organically and hence their premium oil.
