Native Rice Varieties in the Philippines
There are three indigenous varieties of rice in the Philippines which also happen to be the most popular. These are the white rice, brown rice and Malagkit.
1. White Rice
Pale in color, mild in flavor and soft to the touch, white rice is the most common variety from the Philippines. It gives a fluffy form when cooked. Besides, it is available in long, medium and short grain forms. As such, it can make a wide range of dishes starting with steamed rice.
2. Malagkit
The sticky texture of Malagkit underlines its alternative name of “glutinous rice.” It is a must-have inclusion in a rice-based Filipino dish for it makes popular cuisine like biko and suman.
3. Brown Rice
Easily the most nutritious of the three native varieties, brown rice from the Philippines is defined by its color. Its whole grain form including the outer bran makes it a healthy alternative to barley or oats. It is also high in fiber, has a nutty taste and cooks long.
The biggest rice producing region in the Philippines is Central Luzon with 3.64 million tonnes in 2023. Cagayan Valley follows at 3.03 million tonnes while Western Visayas rounds up the top 3 with 2.3 million tonnes.
Despite its heady output, USDA figures show that the Philippines may still need an extra 3.8 million tonnes in 2024. Though the Philippines government has indicated that their projections are lower than USDA’s, importing this amount will make the country the biggest world importer of rice for the current trading year. It will overtake China, which has held the import record since 2019 and is projected to import 3.5 million tonnes of rice in 2024.
