Main types of lobsters sold in the Netherlands
These include the Oosterchelde Lobster,Canadian Lobster,Norway Lobster, and Cornish Lobster. Lobster fishing in the Netherlands is primarily regulated to protect the population, and the European lobster (Homarus gammarus) is the most common species found in Dutch waters.
1. Oosterchelde Lobster (European Lobster/Dutch Lobster)
Current price: from EUR80 ($85.57) per kg
According to Wageningen University’s Marine Research Report, Oosterchelde lobster is the most popular among Dutch seafood consumers.
Also known as common lobster (Homarus gammarus), this lobster species is mostly available in and around Dutch waters. At home, it comes from Oosterchelde in Zeeland province, which gives it the name Oosterchelde lobster, while others just call it European lobster or Dutch lobster. It is relatively sizable at 60 cm long and 6 kg in weight.
Given its size and popularity, Oosterchelde lobster is among the most expensive in Holland. Our survey of consumer markets shows that the price more or less falls in the upper echelons of EUR 80 to 90 per Kg.
Packaged weight rarely crosses the 1050g mark. Most seafood and supermarket shelves stock anywhere between 400 and1050g, with the 400-600g package for this European lobster being the most popular.
2. Canadian Lobster
Current Price: from EUR 50 ($53.50) per kg
Canadian lobster (Homarus americanus spp.) costs a little bit less than Dutch lobster. Most seafood outlets offer 500g sizes, though this is topped by the 1 kg cap that costs at least EUR 50 per kilo.
3. Norway Lobster
Current price: EUR 25 ($26.74) to 86.59 ($92.64) per kg
The market price of Norway lobster fluctuates monthly across Europe due to seasonality and demand. However, the price can be as low as EUR 25 and as high as EUR 86 per kilo.
4. Cornish Lobster
Cornish lobsters come from the Cornwall coast across the English channel and are imported to Holland. The price range is on the lower side in comparison with other European lobsters.
The Netherlands ranks among the top 15 exporters of lobster worldwide, ranked 13th in 2021 with sales worth $961,000. The main import markets include Canada, Germany and Denmark in descending order of size of shipments.
