Indonesia’s Cocoa Farmers Receive High Farm Gate Prices
Following lowering domestic production levels to 55% of the normal capacity for the 2023-24 year, the price paid to Indonesia’s cocoa farmers rose to 85,000 rupees ($5.34) a kg. The increment more than doubled the earlier farm gate price from December 2023 of 35,000 rupees ($2.20) per kg. This was even as export reference prices hiked by 33% in April 2024.
In April 2024, the government offered to replant ageing cocoa trees so as to increase yields from 200 kg per hectare to 600 kg per hectare.
With the farm gate price of cocoa beans above the 85,000-rupee ($5.34) per kg mark in April 2024, traders make a cocoa industry’s benchmark profit of 8% over this price. This means for every cocoa bean consignment, they charge grinders a retail figure of 91,800 rupees ($5.79) per kg. There is indication, however, that prices may stabilize at the 45,000-rupee ($2.84) mark per kg if the weather conditions return to normal after El Niño by December 2024. This will mean a retail price of 48,600 rupees ($3.07) per kg.
