Cameroon government raises cocoa beans farm gate prices by 25%
In October of 2023, the government of Cameroon increased the guaranteed cocoa bean farm gate price by 25%, to CFA Francs 1500 ($2.47) per kg. Given the volatility of the commodity in recent years, this is a welcome set minimum. For instance in October 2022, the farmer’s price per kilo in Cameroon had gone down to 750 CFA Francs ($1.20). Luckily for farmers, the price raise has held this time round into 2024 due to the reigning global shortage of the commodity which has led to a sharp increase in the price of cocoa beans.
Cameroon produced 290,000 tonnes of whole cocoa beans in the 2022-23 market year and expects to top this in the 2023-24 period, to 300,000 tonnes.
In 2021, the country ranked fourth in cocoa exports, totaling 212.681 million tonnes, behind Côte d’Ivoire, Ecuador and Nigeria, according to the World Bank.
