Brazil Government Determined to Double Cocoa Production by 2030
Since 2000, Brazil has been putting effort to re-emerge as a major production center. The government plans to double production by 2030 to 440,000 MT through a modernization drive on cocoa farms. In 2023, the country announced a major comeback program that included modernization of farms with harvesting machines. If this goes according to plan, Brazil’s cocoa production will mirror that of neighboring Ecuador whose 2021 output was 327,903 MT.
In 2021, Brazil emerged the seventh biggest cocoa-producing nation in the world with 269,731 metric tonnes (MT) of cocoa beans. This was half the early 1980s production output of 430,000 MT per year, a period when Brazil used to rank second after Ivory Coast in global production. The reason for the fall was the outbreak of "Witches’ Broom," a fungal disease that destroyed thousands of acres of cacao trees in the southern part of Bahia state in the late 1980s.
