California is home to seven abalone species
There are at least seven abalone species in the United States, all on the coast of California. Five of these are distinguished by their skin colors, namely red abalone, green abalone, white abalone, black abalone, and pink abalone. Other types include flat abalone and pinto abalone. Green and white abalone are both almost depleted in California waters and are hard to find.
US red abalone is biggest in the world
The US hosts the world’s biggest abalone, red abalone (Haliotis rufescens), which dwells in the Pacific. The species reaches a maximum 30 cm length, and has a legal harvest size of at least 18 cm. The biggest specimens come from southern California where there is more kelp and algae to eat than in northern California.
Endangered white abalone
For 7400 years, native Americans have subsisted on white abalone (Haliotis sorenseni). According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), this Pacific Ocean creature averages 1.7 pounds in weight. This perhaps explains its long-term popularity as seafood. However, overfishing in the 1970s saw the population drop by 99% to the present-day levels in the 2020s of less than 2,500 snails. It entered the endangered species list in 2001.
